Last Knight Publishing is proud to announce the upcoming release of The Breach by Brian Kaufman. This exciting retelling of the Alamo with a twist is one of the best books youll read this year.
The Breach is the story of General Manuel Fernandez Castrillón, aide-de-camp to Santa Anna during Mexico's invasion of Texas in 1836. For the first time, the story of the Alamo is told exclusively from the side of the Mexican Army. Rich in cultural and historical detail, The Breach presents a provocative new view of a traditional American tale.
In a charged political atmosphere, the aging Mexican general risks the promise of an independent command to oppose the personal and professional conduct of General Santa Anna, a man that Castrillón is bound, by duty and honor, to support. Castrillón battles his commanding officer over tactics, the brutal treatment of prisoners, and the fate of a beautiful young Mexican girl.
The Breach takes the form of Castrillón's translated journal. Through the act of writing, Castrillón examines Romantic themes while his political values are being shattered and reshaped.
The historical Castrillón was witness to nearly every controversial event in the Texas campaign, including the alleged execution of Davy Crockett and four other Alamo prisoners.
Praise for The Breach:
"The Breach" is a compelling, deftly written, stirring, unflinching and insightful novel from cover to cover."
- Midwest Book Review
"Reads like a dream...a fine work of original fiction"
-Dr. Stephen L. Hardin, author of "Texian Illiad: A Military History of the Texas Revolution"
"Excellent!...I began reading this book without reading any of the advanced praise or cover blurbs. I did not know this was a work of fiction until I read the first sentence of the Afterward. I was, quite simply, dumbfounded..."
- BookReview.com
"Brian Kaufman's almost Nabokovian 'Introduction' to 'The Breach,' the 'Translator's Notes,' the excellent 'footnotes'...are sufficiently convincing, that by the time I'd begun the first chapter I looked back to the title page, reassuring myself that the manuscript I held was, in fact, a novel."
Allen Wier, author of "Blanco," and "A Place For Outlaws"
"A thoroughly interesting and original Alamo volume."
William Chemerka, "The Alamo Journal"
"[The Breach] did what good historical fiction does, sending me to modern histories...looking for more
information..."
Reese Vaughn, "The Victoria Advocate"
"[Kaufman's] treatment of the behavior of Mexican officers in Texas is the most accurate I've ever read...The 'Napoleon of the West' surrounded by his cronies. Some were capable military men as Captain Navarro and General Castrillón. If one of them had been in command the Texas rebellion would probably have had a different ending."
C.D. Huneycutt, author of "The Alamo: An In-Depth Study of the Battle"
"The book is one of those rarest of entities: a well-written historical novel that adds to our overall understanding of history... I thoroughly enjoyed the read."
Charlie Yates, "The Telegraph and Texas Register," Texian Legacy Association.
